HDMI 1.4 introduces a major revision to HDMI cable construction, previous HDMI versions (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc) were all of the same basic construction but tested differently, the HDMI 1.4 cable is quite different yet still retains backwards compatibility. HDMI 1.4 cables incorporate a fifth shielded twisted pair that will be used for ethernet channel and audio return, referred to as HEAC, HDMI Ethernet and Audio return Channel. The new shielded twisted pair uses the previously unused pin 14 and the Hot Plug Pin 19 with the shield or drain connected to the CEC ground on Pin 17 of the HDMI connector.
The HDMI 1.4 cable can be used today with all exisitng HDMI equipment and can be used for the next generation of devices that will transfer data and return audio, it is estimated that 24% of HDMI devices will make use of the new ethernet channel which supports bi-directional 100Mbps data. Futureproof your system today buy using an HDMI 1.4 cable, previous version HDMI cables will NOT support these functions due to the cable being physically different even though the 19 pin connectors are the same.
