The toslink connector is approximately 6mm square with 2 corners chamferred and a round hole or pin in the centre which carries the optical core, most modern TVs will have an optical output that can be conected to a sound bar or surround sound system. A single optical cable can carry multiple sound channels such as 5.1 or 7.1.
The digital audio signals used with optical cables are based on the Sony / Philips Digital Interface standard and hence are often referred to as SPDIF cables.
