Choosing a USB cable

Match the connector at each end to your devices: USB-A on computers and chargers, USB-B on printers and scanners, Mini B on older cameras and sat navs, and Micro B on older phones and accessories. USB 2.0 cables carry 480Mbps; for external drives and fast devices, choose USB 3.0 or USB-C.

Length

Passive USB 2.0 cables work up to 5m. For longer distances, use an active (repeater) extension, which boosts the signal, or a USB over CAT5 extender.
